This rig is the oldest one still active in the FDNY. This Seagrave apparatus was purchased in 1999, operating as Tower Ladder 9 in Manhattan. It was buried in rubble and severely damaged when the World Trade Center towers fell on 9/11.
Lieutenant Warren Smith of Ladder 9 ordered his chauffeur to park the rig near St Paul’s Chapel, a few short blocks from the towers. Considering the South Tower had just been struck and debris was still coming down, it was the obvious choice. St Paul’s Chapel became known as “The Little Chapel That Stood.” Ladder 9’s apparatus stood right with it.
Ladder 9 is stationed at 42 Great Jones Street. 10 of the 15 firefighters that responded on 9/11 made the ultimate sacrifice. The truck was restored by Seagrave and returned to Ladder 9 once that was completed. Eventually making its way to Tower Ladder 161, where it serves as a spare.
